This work on paper evokes "La Scala;" Milan's iconic opera house. The vermillion color is a reference to the red that covers the velvet seats; the stage curtains; and the interior walls of the theater. This color evokes the passion; grandeur; and intensity of emotions that emanate from lyrical performances.

This work on paper is part of a series of three (La Scala 1; 2; and 3). (Work no. 2 is in a private collection in Finland.)

These three compositions also refer to "La Scala;" a solo album by American jazz pianist Keith Jarrett; released in 1997. This recording captures a concert given by Jarrett on February 13; 1995; at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
