ECAL
December 18, 2025
Installation created during my studies at ECAL, the University of Art and Design in Lausanne, as part of Jean Otth's course.
The work creates an interplay between the two-dimensional drawing in the foreground and the three-dimensional space of the garden, questioning the nature of representation and our perception of space. The color palette, dominated by ochre, brown, and reddish tones, establishes a visual harmony between the different planes of the image. There is something melancholic about this urban winter scene, but also a reflection on the boundaries between interior and exterior, between graphic representation and photographed reality.
Jean Otth, my teacher at ECAL, was a major figure in Swiss video and conceptual art. Born in 1940 in Sierre and deceased in 2013, he was one of the pioneers of video art in Switzerland in the 1970s. His work explored the relationships between image, language, and mass media, often taking a critical and poetic approach. His video works, performances, and installations have influenced several generations of artists. As a teacher at ECAL, he passed on his passion for media experimentation and his reflections on the status of the image in contemporary society, profoundly influencing many students with his demanding and stimulating approach to art in relation to the media.
