As an abstract painter, I'm not interested in representing an existing space. Yet the title of the work (Brooklyn Subway Station) evokes a specific place. This painting, from the "Walls" series, refers to the traces left by generations of New Yorkers who have traveled through the subway. These superimposed traces connect us to the past but also to the present. Some traces are half-erased, others are recent and more distinct. You have to stop to see these elements. I think a painter is someone who takes the time to contemplate the world in order to render it on canvas. And the traces of humankind on the walls of the New York subway are important and are part of what fascinates me about this world.
