"Dolomiti Dance" appears on Ralph Towner's 2017 album "My Foolish Heart" on ECM, recorded solo on classical guitar.
The composition alternates between density and breath, an almost choreographic rhythm of fullness and emptiness.
Texture as a musical gesture. The fine, repeated vertical striations recall dense, scattered lines of notes, evoking what critics call Towner's "super-detailed" and "busy" work on this piece. Conversely, the flat brown areas, quieter and more massive, can be interpreted as sustained chords, the resonant spaces between two rapid phrases—this alternation between delicate virtuosity and dense texture runs through both the guitar playing and the canvas.
The geometric structure as a dance score. The division into two horizontal registers and several vertical columns suggests a rhythmic structure, almost measure by measure, like the regulated steps of a dance.
