The work is built on a tension between order and disruption, between what is framed and what overflows, a tension that resonates deeply with the very idea of memory.
The geometric structure: memory as architecture.
The composition rests on a network of interlocking rectangles, evoking classified fragments, almost mental compartments. I'm thinking of the way we try to organize the past into distinct zones, to give it a clear form.
This constructivist rigor is reminiscent of Mondrian, but it is never entirely stable.
The yellow splashes: that which resists oblivion.
Upon this ordered architecture crash splashes of bright, uncontrollable, solar yellow, impossible to contain within the compartments.
Yellow here is the quintessential color of August: summer light, the warmth of memory, something dazzling and somewhat violent. These splashes don't respect boundaries. They cross the panels, they stain the white, they overflow, like happy memories that resist rational ordering.
The dominant white: the space of evocation.
Most of the surface remains white, open. This is the mental space in which memory is reconstructed, incomplete, fragmentary. We never remember everything; we piece it back together from a few intense bursts.
"I Will Remember August" questions the workings of affective and visual memory: we don't retain the whole, we retain colors, lights, a few vivid shapes, here the burning yellow of a summer sun, contained within structures that emotion always ends up overflowing.
