The term "Saudade" is a Portuguese word deeply rooted in the culture of Portugal and Brazil. It has no direct equivalent in other languages; but it is often described as a melancholic or nostalgic feeling; a mixture of sadness; longing; and loss.

For me as an artist; melancholy is a feeling that drives me to create.

Astrud Gilberto captured the essence of saudade in her performances; not only through the lyrics of the songs; but also through the way she sang them. Her soft; almost whispery voice and minimalist vocal style conveyed an emotional depth that touched listeners around the world.
