"The earth was formless and void; and darkness was over the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving above the face of the waters."This passage describes a primordial state of the world; before creation; where the Spirit of God hovers over the waters of chaos. This movement over the water symbolizes the creative act; the transition between disorder and harmony; between the formless and the structured.
The composition of juxtaposed squares evokes a progressive structuring of chaos which echoes the story of Genesis where God imposes order on the void and darkness.
The flowing textures; the splashes speak to us of the movement of water and air. It is a visual representation of the divine Spirit moving above the waters.
The contrast between dark and light areas refers to the separation of light and darkness; one of the first acts of creation.
Finally; the presence of swirling features in the background may evoke the energy of the divine breath; the Ruah.
