This work is inspired by Ron Carter’s piece “Quiet Times.”
This painting uses only three colors: black, off-white, and a vibrant sunny yellow. This mirrors the approach of the Third Plane trio: Ron Carter on double bass, Herbie Hancock on piano, and Tony Williams on drums. Three voices, nothing more. No frills. Each element occupies its space with a quiet authority.
The blocks of color are clearly defined, but the edges of the yellow in the lower right reveal the painter’s touch—the visible brushstroke that bleeds slightly. The Penguin Guide to Jazz hails the album as “Carter’s most impressive performance under his own name.” This tension between formal rigor and spontaneous momentum is precisely what we see in the painting: the geometry holds, but the painter’s hand remains present.
