Inspired by the music of Thelonious Monk.

This is a mixed-media work on paper, measuring 50 × 65 cm, created in 2024. The composition is structured around two distinct zones that interact like the two sides of the same night.

The connection to "Round Midnight"

The title refers to the standard by Thelonious Monk (1944), one of the most frequently performed and enigmatic compositions in jazz.

Gesture as improvisation

The marks—broad brushstrokes, splashes, and scratches—evoke jazz improvisation: decisions made in the moment, irreversible and deliberate. The painting is not corrected; it "grooves." Blue emerges like an unexpected note—the "blue note"—steering the melody in an unforeseen direction.

I resonate with this thought of Monk’s: "The notes you don't play matter as much as the ones you do." For me, these notes correspond to the white, tranquil spaces within my painting.
