Patrick Piccinelli stayed in Rome with his wife in 1980. His visual memory recorded the multitude of graffiti that covered the walls. An art student at the time; he was literally enthusiastic about the poetic encounter between the different periods (ancient; renaissance; contemporary) of the city that exist simultaneously in the streets of the Italian city. This painting has an improvised “writing” zone like tags. Piccinelli uses this spelling in contrast to the geometric structure.Graffiti was very present in the city of Rome in the 1980s. It was often used as a form of artistic and political expression by young Romans of the time. City walls were often covered in graffiti; drawings and political messages. Graffiti could be found throughout the city; but was more common in outlying neighborhoods and industrial areas.
