This work on canvas evokes the music of contemporary composer Olivier Messaien.
This 20th century French composer is recognized for his unique approach to music; where silence plays a crucial role.
Messiaen uses silence to structure his compositions. These silences allow listeners to contemplate the sounds that have just died away; or to anticipate those that will follow.
Similarly in my painting; the use of smooth; unshaded geometric areas highlights the improvised drawings as well as the stains and splashes. For me these structured areas represent the silences of my painting.
For Olivier Messiaen; silence is as fundamental an element as sound in the construction of his musical universe. He considers it as a space of contemplation; mystery and transcendence; where the listener is invited to a spiritual as well as a musical experience.
