I made another painting whose composition is similar to this one but with a dominant blue color (Silent Concerto no. 1).

This work on canvas evokes the music of Olivier Messaien.

This 20th century French composer is known for his approach to music; in which silence plays a crucial role.

Messiaen uses silence to structure his compositions. These silences allow listeners to contemplate the sounds that have just died away.

Similarly in my painting; the use of smooth and unshaded geometric areas highlights the improvised drawings as well as the stains and splashes. For me these structured areas represent the silences of my painting.

For Olivier Messiaen; silence is as fundamental an element as sound in the construction of his musical universe. He considers it as a space of contemplation; mystery and transcendence; where the listener is invited to a spiritual as well as a musical experience.
