I love the vibrant atmosphere of the Sicilian summer. This abstract work echoes the intense colors that characterize summertime Sicily.
I love the flamboyant reds and oranges of blood oranges and golden apricots. I love the bright pink of prickly pears with their magenta flesh dotted with tiny black seeds.
Palermo; the Sicilian capital; offers a spectacle of colors similar to my work. The city walls oscillate between golden ochre; orange terracotta; and pale pink; all witnesses to the passage of time under the Mediterranean sun.
The Byzantine mosaics of the Palatine Chapel use these same deep reds; bright oranges; and contrasting blacks. The geometric shapes of the work echo the motifs of the Romanesque frescoes and the polychrome marble inlays that adorn these sacred places.
I tried to represent the very essence of the Sicilian summer: warmth; light and beauty of colors intensified by the Mediterranean sun.
