"The Summer Knows," acrylic paint, gouache, collage, pigment, varnish.
This work is inspired by the title by Tony Bennett (composition by Michel Legrand).
The vivid, almost aggressive red that occupies the upper part of the composition is a direct reference to summer light at its zenith—not the gentleness of spring, but the dry intensity of July. Beside it, the watercolor orange adds a thermal vibration, as if the heat were visible, rippling slightly across the surface of the paper.
The fuchsia pink at the bottom introduces a different temporality: softer, more intimate, it evokes twilight, the end of summer, the awareness that the season is passing.
The composition of quasi-geometric blocks is reminiscent of Mondrian, but here the rectangles don't fit together perfectly—they overlap, spilling slightly over. This slight disorder is also "summery": summer never fits exactly within its assigned frame. It overflows. It exceeds.
