This work is sold with a mat (passe-partout).
Dimensions of the collage-painting: 25.5 x 18 cm.
Total dimensions: 40 x 30 cm.
The title does not depict the landscape literally; rather, it suggests it through a single gesture: a white tear. This ragged edge evokes a distant ridge—a line of hills (or perhaps snow) on the horizon. The green square acts as a window onto this landscape, while the solid red—intense, immediate, and commanding—creates a tension regarding depth: the "distant" element appears tiny and fragile, dwarfed by an incandescent foreground. The landscape becomes a matter of emotional distance rather than geography.
"Distant Hills" is a track by jazz guitarist Ralph Towner.
The contrast between lyricism and restraint: in Towner’s music, intense emotion is conveyed through great economy of means and ample space. In my own work, vibrant red sits alongside vast white silences and a few delicate, slender lines.
The concept of distance: Towner’s music often possesses a horizon-like quality—a melody that seems to arrive from afar, nostalgic yet devoid of pathos. The fragile white border amidst the red and green serves as a visual equivalent: a sustained note echoing from the distance.
The artisanal touch: torn paper, splatters, and handwritten marks—this embraced imperfection calls to mind the improvisational nature and "living" texture of Towner’s playing.
